Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

ISO27001 Annex A control A5.27 states "Knowledge gained from information security incidents shall be used to strengthen and improve the information security controls."

Understanding the root cause of an incident will (hopefully) mean that you can address the issue, and prevent a repeat event in future.  This is not the same as a post incident review, which is intedned to improve how it was handled.  The RCA helps you to establish cause, and therefore possible corrective actions.
