It's time to talk to your family about Cybersecurity

Gary Hibberd

This doesn't mean 'grilling' your kids about who they're talking to online. It means having a sensible conversation with them about what they do, where they go, and what they see online.

Keep in mind that at your company you have someone responsible for IT and cybersecurity - in your home it's either you, your partner or your kids!

Are you having 'THE Talk' about Cybersecurity

Pointing at a computer laptop.

Seek to understand, and then be understood. Don't do this in a confrontational way, but explain to your kids that you want to understand their use of technology. If they're on social media, how are they using it? What are they sharing? Who are they talking to? What groups are they in?

Handle this delicately and with the intention to learn and you won't go far wrong. Just keep in mind that YOU most likely handed the device to your children when they were younger. So their connection with it is largely down to you, and the way that YOU interact with tech.

Lead by example

Develop healthy habits when using technlogy, such as reducingthe use of mobiles devices at the kitchen table or while watching TV. If you use your device while chatting to your kids, then don't be surprised when they do the same.

But it's not just for kids.

Talk to your loved ones, old and young.

Are your elderly loved ones putting themselves at risk? Don't assume that Cybercriminals aren't targetting them too.

Cybersecurity awareness month (October 2024) was looking to 'Secure our World', so don't think cybersecurity starts and ends at your Boardroom.

Take the message home, and have balanced, open and honest conversations about online security and safety. But remember to practice what you preach!
